I am doing this to help anyone who might be looking for a place to talk about losing weight and getting in shape in order to help change their lifestyle. And... I'm doing this for me. To help me remember where I was and where I'm going. And to not forget about that "big fat guy" who weighed over 300lbs in April 2011.
This morning I woke up, laying in bed, I was remembering just what I had eaten that prior day, and the day before that....and I realized WOW..I am STILL an OVER EATER. And just how easy it would be to fall right back into that trap.
A little background on myself.....
I am a 49 yr male, 6ft 3in tall and right now I weigh 225lbs (11/9/2011) I am married with 2 teenage children, 3 dogs, 3 cars, 2 mortgages and a partridge in a pair tree. :)
In April I made a decision to change almost everything about my lifestyle.
I weighed in at 306lbs April 1, 2011
I have a membership at the local Gold's Gym and now instead of using it 1-2 times a week, I decided to start going everyday.
And just prior to 4/1 I went to my local GNC store in the mall, talked with the Manager (Nate- he is a competitive body builder) and he helped me make some choices on vitamins, diet, and a workout plan.
Over the years my weight has fluxed from 240 to over 300lbs (twice).
And from the time I was 18yr I have had Twenty-One orthopedic surgeries. (13 on my left knee, 2 lower back, neck, both shoulders, elbow, finger and my most recent and the one that has caused me the most pain and weight gain...My feet.
So in other words I have gained and lost a couple of hundred pounds over the last 30 years. Many of my problems have come from me having an injury that causes me to stop working out and fall back into back and destructive eating habits..Because I AM AN OVER EATER! So needless to say I want this time to be my last time with re-gaining the weight.
So what can I do about this? What can any of us do about this? This the real problem with losing weight...GAINING IT BACK!!!
So I thought Blogging about this might help me and anyone else who is looking for a place to talk about this situation.
I'm going to try and treat this like people who are in AA. Let's talk about it and help each other along the way.
Please share your thoughts, successes, failures and ideas, so maybe everyone can start living and maintaining a better lifestyle.
I will talk in my next blog about what I did to get started and what I'm currently doing.
Day Two of my new Blog.
What did I do to get started.......
Realizing that I needed to lose weight
1st- Get Healthy again
2nd- To try and get my feet to feel better
3rd- To see my kids grow up! This was my biggest motivation.
I've never had too much of a problem when I put my mind to do something to get motivated to go "all in" and do it right. I decided I HAD TO GET IN SHAPE!! So, I had the right mind set and I was going to commit to reaching my goal no matter what.
Like I mentioned before I had gone to GNC and talked about starting a plan of attack. This plan started with a "CLEANSE". I did a 7 day cleanse and with that I did a 5 day "FAST" with only drinking the Lean Shakes from GNC. And if you think I was on the toilet for 7 days I can assure you, I was not. lol But after the first 2 weeks of being on the cleanse and working out I had lost 19lbs. I had never done one of these before, and I thought my system could certainly use a cleaning out. And I must tell you, it has made all the difference in the world.
Now I was realizing that this was working and I wanted to do more and keep going.
(Side note)......To all my female friends out there. Men lose weight quicker and easier then women do!! There I said it! I don't know if that's medically true, but I'm saying it anyway. I know it's not fair, but lets face it you women need to work harder and longer to see the same kind of results.
Ok.....so now that things are going pretty well with the weight loss now I needed to step up the workouts. By this time I was going to Gold's 6-7 days a week once a day.
TIP OF THE DAY-I would lift weights and then do my cardio. By doing it in this manor with lifting first and then cardio it would help burn more calories longer after my workout.
Well that's enough for today... I do have a job. lol
I see that some of you have liked this Blog on Facebook, PLEASE, PLEASE make comments and tell your stories, I truly think this will help all of us to stay motivated and live a healthier life! Have a Great Day!
Day 3
DEDICATION-
What does dedication mean to you?
Does it mean committing to your goal and doing what it takes to make it to that goal?
Does it involve you getting up at 5:30 in the morning to get up an go to the gym?
Does it make you think about what you are ordering when you go out to a restaurant?
Do you push your self harder every time you go to the gym?? Do 5 more reps...go that extra mile on the tread mill...add 5 more pounds to what you are lifting.
Dedication is something you need to have in order to make those healthy choices so you can change your lifestyle.
Can you dedicate 30 min to an hour a day to exercise?
Can you dedicate to drink at least 8 glasses or more of water a day?
Will you dedicate spending the little extra to eat the right way and take your vitamins?
These are all of the things I have dedicated my self to these last 7 months. It has not always been easy..to say the least, but I feel I have had to do this as part of dedicating myself to the commitment I made to change my life.
Will YOU dedicate yourself to changing your lifestyle? What sacrifices will you make?
I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!!
Even though I had a super busy weekend I still needed to find time for myself and find time to exercise. We had over 8 hours of load-in Fri night and Saturday and an 8 hr rehearsal on Sunday. I was able to get to the gym for 2 hrs on Sat morning and did 30min at home on Sunday. It wasn't much but it just gets the heart pumping and helps you get going.
This one of the problems in the crazy/busy world we all live in...when do we find time to take care of ourselves?
We have to make time!!
If we don't make time now, when will we ever have time later. When we are too sick or too fat to really make a difference.
I feel like if I don't workout I begin to miss it. I've never gotten to this point before, and to tell you the truth...It feels really good!! I like to sweat, I like to get my heart pumping, I like the way I'm starting to look in the mirror. There is nothing better than having people say to you "You look Great". It really keeps you motivated to keep going.
And if you don't have that person in your life or friends that help keep you motivated....FIND SOMEONE! Or even better...I/We are right here for you. That's what I started this for....let's keep helping each other and help all of us stay on track to change our lifestyle and improve our lives.
I hope everyone has a fantastic Tuesday and please watch the video Jen just posted on the blog.
:)
Welcome to Wednesday Nov 16th...Happy Hump Day!!
Lets talk about Soda......
I will freely admit that I was addicted to Diet Coke. For a while I was on a 6-8 bottle/can a day habit. I figured Diet Coke....it's Diet, it must be good for me or at least it shouldn't be bad for me.
I WAS WRONG!!! Wow, was I wrong!
I'm not going to get into the medical problems with drinking too much soda but from what I have read and heard, there really is no upside to drinking pop.
I was drinking DC (diet coke) for the caffeine and just to be drinking something. I don't drink coffee so I thought I really needed something to help keep me going...once again I was WRONG.
Problems with Diet Soda...#1 Problem- SODIUM
What does sodium do to you? It makes you retain water. And if you are trying to lose weight, retaining water will not allow that to happen.
Problem #2 -CAFFEINE
Honestly...your body does not need this stimulant. Try to do somethings naturally, like exercising. Give your bodies natural stimulants a chance.
Problem #3 SUGAR SUBSTITUTES/ASPARTAME
Once again not going to get into all the medical issues but these things are HUGE problems and can reek havoc on your system. Your body does not know how to deal with these chemicals. Think about where all these chemicals have to go in your system...the two major places I will talk about are your LIVER and your KIDNEYS. These are the 2 main filters of your body and all these chemicals we are putting in to our system need to be filtered thru these two organs. We need to take care of these two organs, they need to last us our lifetime. My Mother died from Kidney failure after 7 years on dialysis, and I can tell you it was not the most pleasant way to go.
Solutions:
Stop drinking pop!
Drink water
Drink Milk
Stop drinking Diet Soda!
Get off the caffeine!
Now, how do you stop drinking lots of soda all the time???
You need to CHANGE YOUR LIFESTYLE!! Commit to first cutting back or just go for it and go COLD Turkey. And that my friends is was a real B!@CH.... But I did it and I know other friends who have done it as well. The hardest part is getting rid of the caffeine buzz you think you need every morning. Once you get past that.....your home free. :) It will take you about 2 weeks.
When I did that a couple of years ago I lost about 15 pounds in a month.
I started sleeping so much better...and so will you.
A friend of mine has now lost over 70 pounds in 6 months and one of the only things she has done is to quit drinking Diet Soda. (you know who you are) :)
TIP OF THE DAY!!
Go to Wal-Mart and try the CLEAR AMERICAN flavored sparkling Water. They have many flavors to choose from and a 33.8oz bottle is only .68. I think you will find drinking these will really help you get off drinking lots of soda. These are delicious and with the carbonation it feels like you are having a soda because of the bubbles. And yes I know that it does have Aspartame in it, so remember to still drink some plan water as well.
I hope you all have a wonderful and Healthy Wednesday.
Let's keep this Blog going. Please add comments or add your own personal stories.
Thanks again....talk to you tomorrow. :)
Thursday Nov 17th
Not feeling motivated to workout/exercise or even go to the gym.......
I don't know about you but there are days I don't want to get out of bed or even think about going to the gym. Well I had one of those days this morning. :( Bed felt good, nice and warm and comfy. It's been a long week of work and rehearsals...and today I was just plan wiped out.
But the alarm went off, and because I have been doing this on a regular basis my mind and body fought the temptation to stay in bed and I got up and got going.
Now when I got to the gym I just started doing what I do every morning....It helped wake me up, and got me going. And that's one of the wonderful things about getting into a healthy routine...sometimes when you might not be motivated to exercise, your body craves it and pushes me to stay on the right path.
TIP OF THE DAY!!!
I was told early on in this process that one of the best ways to burn calories and get your metabolism started up for the day is to do your cardio right away in the morning. Do at least 20+ mins of some type of cardio before you eat anything!!
I start off my day by getting on the elliptical machine...( I HIGHLY recommend using the elliptical because of less stress on your knees, feet and back) and doing 30+ min at a very fast pace. I can usually get in 5 miles done in about 32 min. This gets my heart rate up, gets me sweating pretty good and has me warmed up to do my ab workout. I'll talk about the ab workout I'm doing another time. :)
Have a great day! Please keep sharing this blog with your friends and people you feel may benefit from reading it.
Let's keep this going!! :) Thanks again to all of you who have commented on here or have come up to me and told me how much you are enjoying reading this. It really makes me feel like we are all helping each other.
Nov 18th
It's Friday and the weekend is here! Should we worry about what we eat or drink over the weekend?
I, like many of you will be very busy this coming weekend and the week ahead with Thanksgiving and Black Friday Shopping. Is this a time that we just forget about eating healthy? Do we just give ourselves the week off? Do we just say the "Heck with it" and eat everything in site? Or do we try and eat smart, and not go too crazy on our food choices?
These are real questions, and I don't have the answer for you.......
I struggle with the thought of going to the In-Laws house on Thanksgiving and eating everything in site!!
Remember, I AM AN OVER-EATER!!
I know that after the delicious turkey and ham dinner, and after I have eaten way too much, I will still peck and nibble the whole day long. WHY?!?! Why do I do that?!? I'M FULL, and don't need to eat anymore...
This is something that I fight with and frustrates me to no end.
So what am I going to do about this??? What are WE going to do about our Holiday eating habits?
I am going to try and eat a sensible Thanksgiving meal. Turkey, vegies, salad, a smaller amount of potatoes and only allow myself 1 dessert. And when I'm done I know I should not feel guilty about eating a healthy meal................But I probably will. So then I will make myself get to the gym and continue my routine and work off those calories. And I know what I will be eating is not bad for me, but I need to keep myself motivated and inspired to keep this weight off and stay in shape.
We all need to think about our actions at the dinner tables over these next couple of weeks... WILL WE MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICES?!?
The right choices on what we put on our plates...
The right choices on how MUCH we put on our plates....
The right choices on saying "I've had enough"
TIP OF THE DAY!!
ABS
Don't believe those magazines or Infomercials that claim a 2 min ab routine will give you 6 pack abs!!
I have worked my way up to 950 ab reps almost every morning and I still don't have a 6 pack. lol
I really have worked on increasing this number over these last few months and by the end of Nov , I will be over 1000 ab reps.
If you go to a gym or even at home, I HIGHLY recommend using and exercise ball. If you can do some of your ab work on the ball you will really feel and see the results. Not only does it give you a whole new workout but it helps build and strengthen your CORE, easier and better on your lower back. It also helps with balance and coordination....(anyone who first starts out on the ball knows what I'm talking about..lol)
I do my first 300-400 reps on the ball every morning.
Now when I talk about reps, I'm talking about doing many different machines and exercises for all areas of my mid-section.
300 to 400 sit ups on the ball, working different areas (sides, mid, lower)
50 on the airplane chair with leg lifts (Really great for that lower ab area)
50+ on the weighted ab crunch machine
50 on an upper ab crunch machine
100 on weighted torso twist
50+ on weighted lower back extensions
200 weighted side bends and crunches
50 incline sit ups
Also another great ab exercise is PLANKING... Looks easy...but it's not. LOL start with 15 sec and work your way up to 1 min... You will feel the burn. :)
And after all of this I can tell you that my abs feel pretty darn good and getting rock hard.
Everyone has 6 PACK Abs!! It's just that they are buried under layers of FAT. So if you want a flat stomach and rock hard abs....you really have to work at it. No 2 min exercise will give it to you, and we all need to watch what we eat and maintain a Healthy Lifestyle! :)
I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! Let's keep this Blog going, pass it on to friends and those who you think will benefit from joining us on this journey to put ourselves on a path to a much better and healthier lifestyle.
Nov.21 2011
The weekend is over and now on to THANKSGIVING!!!
It's time to stay strong and stay focused.......
Well it was a fun and extremely busy weekend myself and my family. We finished "Miracle on 34th St" on Sunday, and after a 5 hr strike we finally finish. I really contimplated just staying home thins morning from going to the gym and even work today. I am so tired and sore, back hurts, arm feels like it wants to fall off, feet hurt so bad I can barely walk...but at 5:45a.m I got my butt up out of bed and went to the gym. Did 6 miles while watching "Castaway". It was the perfect movie for me to stay focused and and remind me that there is always a reason to get up and LIVE for TOMORROW by LIVING for TODAY.
Now it's on to Thanksgiving....
What are we going to do to prepare us for this Thursday and the days to follow?
What are we going to do on Thanksgiving?
Well I know I will be going to the In-Laws house for Thanksgiving. Looking forward to seeing the family and watching football and of course all the FOOD.
So what I'm I doing this week??
I am going to make sure I hit the gym everyday and I am going to cut down on my calorie intake as well between now and then as well.
And on Thursday I will try to monitor just how much food I put on my plate and limit myself to just 1 dessert for the day as well. And I need to tell myself that once I am full...I AM DONE EATING!!
Need to fight that urge of continuous munching all day long. This way, maybe I won't be so miserable all night long. lol
I'm telling myself these things today and I'm going to reaffirm these ideas the next few days so I build up the mindset to follow thru with it on Thanksgiving.
TIP OF THE DAY
Fight thru the Pain.
Ok, so I'm going to sound like a guy right now. But I have a motto that I have had to live with for over 25 years. (Because of many injuries and surgeries)
"Pain is Mind over Matter, if You don't Mind it Don't Matter"
Of course if you really have something wrong with you then get it looked at. I'm talking about aches & pains being sore.....stop feeling sorry for yourself and work thru it. It isn't going to kill you!
I think you will find that you will feel better if you work thru it, stretch, sweat and just keep moving. :)
Have a wonderful Monday...let's keep this going. Share with your friends and people you think this might help.
I have really enjoyed reading everyone's comments and stories...THANK YOU so much for sharing.

Cheating on your diet and exercising!!
Somedays all I want to do is eat!! Like last night, I made a pretty good meal for Anni and I, grilled chicken breast, Kraft Homestyle Mac & Cheese (I had a pretty small portion) and some corn. But after that I had a yogurt and a banana, some grapes, about 2 cups of caramel corn and some cashews. I know none of it was horrible for me but I felt like I was eating all night.... and that makes me nervous. Because I do not want to fall into that trap again. I feel like I cheated on my healthy way of eating...and I hate it when I do that! And now with Thanksgiving coming up, what will happen on Thursday?? Ugh!!
It's almost the same way I feel when I don't put in a good workout or if I decide I don't need to do that many
reps/sit-ups/miles on the elliptical. I really have to FIGHT those urges and push myself to do what I need to do.
I think we all can and will CHEAT on our diets and on exercising once an a while, just as long as we realize it and then turn around and correct our behaviors so they don't change or healthy habits.
I hope that by writing this down and confessing, it will help me to stay on track and force me to monitor my eating habits and help motivate me at the gym on days I don't feel to excited to be there.
Let's all have a terrific Tuesday and remember to give a word or two of encouragement to those who might need it today. :)
Wednesday Nov 23 2011
"I Feel Fat!!"
It's the day before Thanksgiving and I feel like I did 7 months ago. WHY?!? I looked at myself in the mirror this morning after doing 7 miles on the elliptical and doing 900 ab reps and all I could see was a fat old man. All I could think of was....."Why am I doing this to myself?" Is it worth it? All of this pain, sweat, getting up at 5:30a.m., why am I killing myself, is it all worth it??
And the answer to that question is "YES!"
Although I really do feel that sometimes I'm just spinning my wheels and I'm never going to change anything, I realize that's just not the case.
Example: Yesterday I grabbed a sweater vest that I bought last Feb when I was pretty big....not realizing that when I thru it in my gym bag. So when I got dressed in the locker room I put it on and it almost went down to my knees. It was SO BIG on me that when I walked into work everyone just laughed at me, and made comments like I should start looking at buying some clothes that fit. :)
And I do realize that I have changed, but there are days when I want things to change over night, Damn it!!
I want it NOW! I want ripped abs! I want bigger arms and a thicker chest. I want to be able to run again, without being in so much pain........
BTW....side note. It was 2 years ago yesterday that I had both of my feet operated on. Prior to the surgery my feet were in pain all the time with a lot of nerve pain shooting up my legs as well. But after the operation I was so hopeful that things would get better.....I WAS WRONG. Afterwards things got much worse, the pain did not go away it wasn't getting better. So I saw another Doctor, tried other treatments and still no results. In Oct 2010 I went on a drug that was for nerve pain, and it seemed to be helping, but there was one little side effect....from Oct to Dec I gained over 20 pounds! Things had gone from bad to worse. :(
I look back at that now and think...Dan, you have come a long way in this last year. Good job!
So I guess the whole point of this entry today is...Be Patient, things don't happen overnight. As badly as we want them too, they just don't change that quickly. Keep working at it. Don't lose sight of your goals! Ask for help. And remember it's a change of Lifestyle, not a quick fix.
Have a WONDERFUL THANKSGIVING Everyone.
Talk to you soon. Please share this blog and lets keep things going. :)
ALMOST 500 Hits on this Blog in 2 Weeks!!
WOW!! Thank you everyone!
I know that it's not a huge number, but seriously, I am overwhelmed.
Just today at the gym I ran into to Facebook friends who said they have been reading my Blog and they both "thanked me for it". So I thought I would check to see just how many hits I've had....492 hits. And just so you know I'm staying logged in so I'm not included in that number.
Once again, THANK YOU! Thank you for reading this and Thank You so much to everyone who has been coming up to me or messaging me that they have been reading this blog. All I can hope for is that I hope it's helping you as much as it is me.
Thank you!
Dan
Your story is inspiring, Dan. I truly believe you will help others (and yourself) with this blog. I have struggled with my weight since I was a little girl. I used to get picked on a lot and had a hard time finding clothes that fit me. In third grade, when I was 8 years old, I weighed 99 pounds. This trend continued for the next ten years. By the time I was 18 and a mere 5’4” I weighed in at a whopping 210 pounds. I felt so overwhelmed by my weight, that I didn’t think I would ever lose it and therefore did not try. Then reality caught up with me… One day, my father sat me down and explained that their insurance company was going to raise their premium through the roof because I was defined as a “medical liability.” The premium would have been so high that they would have had to look elsewhere for insurance, or drop me from their policy. This was a slap in the face and hurt a great deal, but it was the kick in the ass I apparently needed. In January 2007, I joined Weight Watchers in Eau Claire and spin class at the University Recreation Center. My goal weight was set for 150 pounds. To my surprise, the weight began to melt off, and I had finally found a program I could stick with. The first week, I lost 5 pounds. I was truly making lifestyle changes. I even was able to wear my first bikini comfortably in public in the summer of 2007. :) Over the next two years, I started and stopped my Weight Watchers membership a couple times due to certain circumstances life threw me. However, in August 2009, I met my goal weight of 150 pounds and became a Lifetime Member of Weight Watchers. I cannot express the joy and sense of accomplishment I felt that day. It literally brought me to tears. Through Weight Watchers, I learned that what I had been doing…what was working for me…was not a diet, it was a lifestyle change. Everything I learned over the years has stuck with me and helps me to make sound food choices every day. I still track what I eat every day even if I am not proud of it. One of our mottos in Weight Watchers was “If you bite it, write it.”
ReplyDeleteAt the end of 2010, I went through a pretty rough period of time in my life and gained back about 40 of the 50 pounds I had lost. It would be so easy to let myself just go right back to that 210 mark…but I refuse…not to mention, I cannot afford new clothes…AGAIN! :) So, I am instilling the Weight Watchers principles once again, seeking support from family and friends, taking vitamins and dietary supplements, and going to the gym 5 days a week. Currently, I am at 182 pounds. My goal is to be down 10% by the end of December 2011. Some of us are just blessed with the lack of metabolism we have and need to fully embrace a healthy, active lifestyle. That’s just the way it has to be, unless we don’t mind being overweight.
Whenever I am about to eat something I probably should not, or a larger portion than I should, I remind myself of another quote from Weight Watchers, “Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels.” And that folks, is the truth.
Thank you so much Jen for sharing. :) I needed a woman's touch on here. Great story and I know you are working hard at getting into shape and changing you lifestyle habits. Keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteThis is what I'm talking about people!! Let's keep it going. Please share your stories like Jen did, I really think this may help someone change for the better!
OK, so this is a sign. I have been thinking lately (well maybe for the last 20 years) that my 'outside' does not match up with the fun, sexy, beautiful person I feel like on the 'inside.' I am sick of this disconnect. The time is now. I am not ready to expose all of my 'story' but maybe soon. Thanks Dan....see you at Golds! (and maybe we can get SE there too!)
ReplyDeleteI can totally relate with thriftstorechic without even knowing her full story. I have been working out with a personal trainer for almost 3 months now. One day a week is all I could afford but I have been committed. So the money is worth it and it motivates me to stay on track b/c I don't want the money to have been wasted. So it's a motivating splurge I should have done 12 yrs ago. My trainer is amazing b/c he is teaching me to stop dwelling on the scale and the numbers and to just live and make the right choices. If I can focus on that and not the result in numbers, I will lose the weight. So I have been focusing on one day at a time. Which sounds so lame and simple but it's not as simple as you think. I have spent my whole life focused on what the scale is going to say at the end of 7 days of doing some frantic workout and food regime that when I don't hit that number I give up right away. Now I just live each day singlely - trying to make all the right choices through the day....get to the gym or do movement at home and eat lots of protein so I stay full and drink 8 glasses of water, etc. And at the end of the day I reflect at how well I did and then try again the next day. There is no 7 day time limit anymore - I have my whole life to get where I want to be - and ultimately it's not JUST a number, it really is a LIFESTYLE - of knowing what to do and making it happen...of putting myself 1st and not last...of preserving my time so I can have more of it and more fun with it. I have lost about 7 pounds in 3 months but I have lost LOTS of inches. I don't know how many yet b/c my trainer is teaching me to chill and relax and not NEED to know all the time, but just to FEEL it instead. I don't want to reach a number goal and go OK, all done now. I made it. The number is irrelevant in the grand scheme - it's the taking care of myself that is the biggest reward (and challenge). I am re-training my brain to focus on one day at a time and it is so much easier that way. I fail about 10% of the time - but my trainer says thats human and acceptable. Learn and keep trucking. Don't just give up. I want to lose about 10 more pounds. It's not much but for some reason I haven't been able to do it for 12 years. It's never too late. Just take it one day at a time.
ReplyDeleteThanks Leni,
ReplyDeleteAnytime you are ready I will help set up a workout plan with you. And anyone who knows you, knows just how wonderful of a person you are. Thanks for writing on my Blog. Please help keep it going. :)
Bridgette,
ReplyDeleteYou have become a wonderful friend over these last few years and it has been such a pleasure for me to get to know your whole family. Thank you so much for sharing your story. Keep up with the training, take it slow (we know why. And really...if you get any prettier John is going to have to put an armed guard on you to keep all the men off of you. :)
Thanks again for writing on my blog, please help keep this thing going.
Wow!! for the first day on this whole BLOG thing...I would have to say this has been an amazing success!! I'm thrilled! Thank you to everyone who has read this post today. And THANK YOU so much to those who posted their stories.
ReplyDeleteI will promise to keep writing if you promise to keep reading and posting. Have a wonderful night.

ReplyDeleteFor so many years of my life I have dedicated myself to others, to my family and children obviously, to my career, my clients, my friends, volunteering and all these years I have enjoyed every single bit - I ALWAYS did what I WANTED to do, BUT (BIG BUT) I never dedicated any time to myself or for myself. Although I thought that because I was doing everything I WANTED to do that I WAS dedicated to my wants and needs, I REALLY couldn't be farther from it. All that time I spent dedicated to others, I never dedicated enough time to understanding good food choices, why I binge, to workout, to be patient, to think about my personal future health, etc. Now, finally, I am dedicated to myself. It's a little easier for me to have time b/c I am recovering from a brain injury BUT in a strange way I am glad that something happened to shake me up. I'm grateful it wasn't worse and I wish it was better, but you all should not wait until something shakes you up. If you do, it might not be the way you would have shaken yourself. So, I would say the first thing you need to do is dedicate to yourself. The old saying is true, you can't help others if you can't help yourself AND you can't truly give love if you don't know how to love yourself. So, LOVE YOURSELF and you will be able to live and give on....
ReplyDeleteWell said Bridgette. :) Thank You!!
ReplyDeleteWho's going to be there for our kids and loved ones if we don't take care of ourselves.
I am so proud of you for continuing to fight and move ahead after this extremely trying year you've had. Keep it up. And you know you can always ask for help. :)
Yesterday, I was watching the TODAY show and saw a very touching story on the Kathie Lee & Hoda segment that I think many of us over eaters might be able to relate to. Thought I would share. :)
ReplyDelete“Hi I’m Linda and I’m 43 years old. I was a healthy size as a child and didn't start gaining weight until college. I gained my freshmen 15 and kept on going. By my senior year, I was about 50 pounds overweight. I simply didn't pay attention to my portion sizes. I had always wanted to be a TV news reporter but my professor told me that my look wasn’t professional enough for television. It was the first time I realized that my size could make my dreams impossible. I dropped out of college only 6 hours short of a degree and ate myself to 300 plus pounds through daily unhealthy choices. My philosophy was always “tomorrow I start the diet.” One weekend it became clear to me that the man I married couldn’t pretend to find me attractive anymore. It was like my weight was a third person lying in our bed between us."
It would have been super easy for Linda to keep eating herself to death and destroying her life and relationship, but instead she decided to take control of her life. She started to read labels, study online menus before going out to eat, and pay attention to what she was eating.
Her plan was slow and required lots of prayer. It took Linda 20 months to reach goal her goal of 145 pounds. She said that our past struggles and failures have power. Her advice is to decide today what to do with that power.

Hey Dan and everyone - really enjoying reading your posts and you are inspiring me to get back to my routine!! Lost 40 pounds last year mostly through exercise but I've put 20 back on - UGH!! Mostly due to stresses at work, comfort eating, and being stationary trying to stay on top of my workload (I work online). So... keep sharing the tips and successes and struggles - they are helping! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Ann!! Thanks for sharing and that's what I started this for..we all need help to stay on track or to get back into the healthier routine again.
ReplyDeleteThanks again and hope to see you soon!
Dan - Your entry today about soda could not be timelier for me. I have a serious diet soda addiction...to the point of spending over $250 a month on soda (insert gasp here). At my worst, I was drinking two 12-packs of Pepsi Max and Coke Zero a day (insert second gasp here)...I know, not healthy at all. Once upon a time, I had stopped drinking soda (cold turkey) for 9 months. Then one evening I had one soda and blew it. I am once again attempting to ax my soda addiction or at least take it down to an occasional activity. I am now down to two 20 oz. bottles of Pepsi Max and a one liter bottle of Diet Coke a day. This will continue to diminish. One lifestyle change I had made that has been super helpful is starting a new Vitapak from GNC. The Vitapaks offer a variety of vitamins and dietary supplements in one convenient package for each day. After speaking with Nate at GNC, we decided the best Vitapak for me and my lifestyle is the Women's Ultra Mega Active. My energy level has increased significantly! I feel great. :) To find out more about the Vitapak I am using, copy the following link into your browser: http://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4190908&cp=3593185.4046440.
ReplyDeleteFood, nutrition, and well-being have always been strong interests of mine. Next year, I will be starting my master's program in Nutritional Sciences with the goal of becoming a Registered Dietician. Now, I do not always practice what I preach...but I am working on it. I know soda is bad for me, but sometimes an addiction can be so powerful that you reason with yourself to continue the behavior. Though it is not an excuse, it is reality.
Dan explained in today’s blog some of the serious health issues drinking diet soda can cause. Some can even be life threatening. More reasons to stop drinking soda…
1. Corrosion and staining of teeth
2. Bone loss and risk of osteoporosis (especially in women)
3. Mood swings
4. Increased blood pressure (which makes your heart work harder than it should)
5. Thinning of stomach lining (which can cause ulcers)
6. Impaired digestion
Wow...I really need to kick this addiction.
My comments today:
ReplyDelete1. I rejoined Golds' last night!!!!! Here I come Thigh Abductor Machine!!
2. Everything in moderation!!! My kids make fun of me for my Dr Oz crush, but I just read his book and per him: Coffee is actually good for you! I cannot comment on Soda (my 'bread is buttered' by Pepsi) but the soda companies do sell healthy drinks too! :)
Wow!! Thanks for sharing Jen. Has anyone you know given you a hard time about drinking so much pop? :P
ReplyDeleteAnd Thanks Leni. Glad you are getting out to the gym again.... and I hate that machine. lol
And yes Pepsi does have one of my favorite sodas, Diet Sierra Mist. Mmmm
I thought that machine was mostly for women's problem areas! (I kill two birds with one stone cause I don't have to do kegels too!)
ReplyDeleteThankfully I have never been too attracted to soda. I like a sip or two about once or twice a month, ladies you know what I mean. There is a day I would kill someone for soda, chocolate and salt. But that's all. I could seriously live without it. I also don't drink caffeine hardly ever. I have and used to alot - mmmmm cappucino! I am a big tea drinker and water drinker and I also love lite vanilla soymilk...paired with cinnamon cheerios and OMG it tastes like cinnamon rolls. I strive for 5 bottles of 16oz water a day. General rule of thumb is half your body weight in ounces. I have about 3 cups of tea each day - especially easy as the temp drops. Herbal tastes yummy but compared has no real value. Black tea, green tea are best choices - so many great flavors and you can get some green teas in decaf. One packet of splenda - if I want it cold - I drop some cubes in.
ReplyDeleteI wish I liked tea...I know there are so many that are good for you and a lot of people really like drinking it......I don't. :(
ReplyDeleteI like a nice sweetened tea in the summer but that's about it. BTW Bridgette...you look great and can tell you have been working out. Keep up the good work. :)
Remember this...
ReplyDeleteTOMORROW NEVER COMES.
Think about it - it's true, right?
So, when you say you will start that diet or start that exercise 'tomorrow'...well, unless you actually do....tomorrow never comes.
I am determined to lose most of my weight BEFORE the end of the year. The holidays will be the hardest b/c I LOVE to bake and bake and bake. And I have to taste test everything!! :) BUT I am going to learn to resist and learn control and learn forgiveness and learn to keep going no matter what mistakes I make - get to the gym, make good choices, one day at a time, I am not a failure if I screw up, get back on track right away. I am NOT going to give myself permission to screw up all this season and START again January 1st. I am going to defy this idea that the holidays are a FREE pass. I am going to prove to myself that I can overcome this challenge - because I can, if I CHOOSE to. I am not weak....often. I won't quit.
Find your own mantra, your own positive self talk, write it on post-its and paste them everywhere - the fridge, the bathroom mirror, your dashboard, desk. tell yourself what you ARE GOING to do, and when you SEE these notes telling you that everywhere you go, you begin to believe. Seeing isn't believing people, believing is seeing. BELIEVING IS SEEING. Once you BELIEVE you can lose the weight/look/feel good/fit, only then will you be able to SEE it (make it) happen.
Another fave quote to end my ramble:
Your life is exactly the way you want it to be...or else you'd make a change.
Ponder that one a few times - it can apply to anything you struggle with.
Your life is EXACTLY the way you want it to be, or ELSE you'd MAKE a change.
Hugs to all! keep fighting the good fight :)
You guys rock! Got back on the Wii this morning - I usually do the eliptical and/or the treadmill but the Will Fit is a great way to get moving on a day when I'm struggling. It gets you playing games and before you know it, you're sweating and have worked out all your major muscle groups and kept your heart rate up. If you haven't tried it, I highly recommend it - especially given that it's beginning to feel a lot like... WINTER. Blech. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks again Bridgette!! That is so true!
ReplyDeleteWe all need to stay strong and get thru this time of the year...it will be so easy to fall waaaayyy off the wagon with Thanksgiving and Christmas. And then think I'll just start over Jan 1...
We need to keep talking on here, ask for help, stay focused. :)
I just watched a video by Luke Wren of Highland Fitness on the benefits of "Mate' Tea"-natural caffeine for those of you who need it-plus loaded with tones of energy vitamins and minerals. Available at Infinitea House
ReplyDeleteI have been off of caffeine for over a year-still crave a Coke, but mostly I drink water. I've been trying to get in 80 oz a day; striving for more. Drinking water consistently helps your body from retaining the water in reserves and will flush out toxins and keep your kidneys and other organs at their best.
I'm enjoying the blog, Dan. Keep it up!
Thanks Ann,
ReplyDeleteYes I have WiiFit and a couple of those Knects sports games and they are a great workout. So, if you don't have a gym membership, what a great way to workout and get a sweat on.
Ann, I'm glad we have helped motivate you to get going again. :)
btw..I love the beach volleyball on Wii.
Thanks Teri,
ReplyDeleteGreat job on drinking all that water. So right on getting rid of those toxins in our system.
Thanks for the info on the tea product too.
I learned a lot from Luke over the years.
Keep up the good work, and I hope you feel better soon. :)
I have decided to 'challenge' myself by STARTING this life change right smack dab at holiday time. I AM the queen of excuses. I may 'fail' like I have a thousand times before but i will try. NOT to look good but to feel good and be healthy. I was sad when I read the comment Jen posted about Linda whose husband could 'no longer pretend he was attracted to her.' I was in a marriage that was based on appearance. My first husband left me and had an affair because he 'wasn't attracted' to me anymore (after 1 year of marriage!) so I know how that type of rejection feels, BUT I am know married to an amazing man who loves me unconditionally. Would he love to see me look like I did at 16 when he met me? YES, heck yes. He's a normal guy. I am just very blessed to have married a man who is mature enough to see that real love isn't dependent upon appearance. Our society is WAY too concerned with that and I reject the idea that I am only 'attractive' if I am a size 4! With that being said......I have found out that my cholesterol is 302~ and I have to make some changes and if I end up looking good in a pair of jeans when I am done....so be it! :)
ReplyDeleteI should really proof read! Sorry.
ReplyDeleteLOVE YA Leni!! You know a size 4 is a nice side benefit but I want you to get that cholesterol under control!!! You know you can always call me and we can hit Gold's together anytime....right after this weekend. lol But I am available on Sat morning if you want to go.
ReplyDeleteAnd that goes for anyone on here...if you want some help putting a plan together to workout, all you have to do is call me and I will go with you and we can work together on some fitness goals. And I don't charge either. lol
To answer a couple of messages I got reguarding my ab workout.
ReplyDeleteFirst, it has taken me 7 months to get to this point.
Second, I started this routine and continue doing this with doing 1 sit up at a time.
Third, I try to keep it interesting by changing things up and adding new exercises all the time. Otherwise, it can get REALLY Boring!! And if things become boring...That's when we stop doing them.
So with abs...take it slow, ask for help on developing an ab workout, keep it fresh, change things up every so often and remember to push yourself by adding a couple extra reps or some extra weight to the machines.
Thanks again for your comments!! Love IT! :)
A couple of things I got from a great article. I can attest to both of these. Love Green Tea! Plus the strength training I have done is def giving me more tone/definition and keeping calories off on the days I don't go to the gym - even if I miss a few in a row. I know my muscles are working for me :)
ReplyDeleteGet Green Tea
Drinking three cups of the brew daily may spark your metabolism to burn 30 extra calories a day, a study in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise shows. Doesn’t sound like much? That’s 3 pounds off a year—diet-free! The compound ECGC in the tea makes it easier for your body to burn fat. Sip your way slim today!
Pump Some Iron
Start thinking of your gym’s weight room as the “lose weight” room. Strength training, which only about 17 percent of women do, speeds metabolism, torches calories, and sculpts sexy muscles. It’s so effective, in fact, that you should put cardio on the back burner and make strength training 60 percent of your routine—no joke, says Holly Perkins, an ExerciseTV trainer in Los Angeles. Embrace free weights, especially barbells, which work more muscles (you have to hold them steady as you lift) than machines. Remember that the muscle you’re gaining weighs more than the fat you’re shedding; at first, you may not drop pounds, but you’ll be smaller and firmer—go by how your jeans fit.
Thanks Bridgette!! Love it! I totally agree with using free weights, but I do like to mix it up with using some machines as well. For me if I'm working out alone, it's hard to lift a large amount of weight without having a spotter to get the same amount of reps in. So on those days I will use the machines.
ReplyDeleteAs far as the tea goes....well, I will trust you on that one. :) I know green tea is good for you but I just can't drink it. lol
Thanks for posting Bridgette, keep'm coming! :)
For some, Thanksgiving is a simple turkey dinner and a time to give thanks. But for many, it's an eating orgy and a six-week countdown to the same lose-weight-and-get-back-in-shape New Year's resolution that we make year after year…after year.
ReplyDeleteI don't know about you, but I fully intend to break the cycle this holiday season. Enjoy Thanksgiving but don't overindulge; head into the New Year feeling confident, slimmer and in control.
Below are some tips from a Weight Watchers article I saw today.
------------------------------------------
***Make classic recipes light***
If you're hosting dinner or bringing a dish to someone else's house, consider trimming the fat from your recipes.
For instance:
----Make your mashed potatoes creamy with naturally low-fat buttermilk instead of butter
----Pour your turkey pan drippings into a large glass bowl (or you can use a gravy/fat separator) and allow it to sit for 5 minutes so you can skim off a layer of fat. Use some of the fat in your gravy, not all
----Slim down your pie by making a light cookie crumb layer instead of a traditional pie crust
----Leave off the top (or bottom) crust instead of using both. Or forget all about the crusts and bake your pie filling in small ramekins for mini soufflés instead
----Use whole-wheat bread, not white, for stuffing to increase the fiber (not to mention upping its vitamin and mineral profile)
***Know your portions***
To help you size up your servings, come armed with some visuals:
----1 cup of mashed potatoes is about the size of a tennis ball or your fist
----3 ounces of turkey equals a computer mouse or a checkbook
----1/2 cup of green bean casserole fits into a small cupcake wrapper or an ice cream scoop
----1/4 cup of gravy equals 4 tablespoons; measure out some water in your gravy ladle to see how many tablespoons one full ladle holds
***Employ others’ tactics***
New York-based Weight Watchers meeting Leader Elizabeth Josefsberg shares her tricks of the trade at the Thanksgiving table:
----Don't sit down overly hungry; eat a decent breakfast and lunch
----Drink alcohol only when you're eating dinner
----Fill half your plate with vegetables
----Only go for one round of food (aka Liz's "one-plate rule")
----Eat the middle of your pie and skip the crust
***Go for the two-for-one side dish special***
Hopefully not all the vegetables are drenched in butter. Opt for two spoonfuls of vegetable side dishes for each starch-based one that you take (and no, potatoes are not a vegetable in this case).
***Plan on eating leftovers***
There are usually more than enough side dishes for a few meals. Whatever you don't taste today, you can taste tomorrow.
***Seek satisfaction***
Think about what's worth eating and what's not. You can make yourself a baked sweet potato anytime, but your Aunt's sweet potato pie is a once-a-year specialty.
***Fend off food-pushing relatives***
Don't eat something just because your mom wants you to. Compliment her outfit, ask for a recipe, enquire about an old friend — anything to change the topic from why you didn't touch both her pecan pie and pumpkin cheesecake.
------------------------------------------
Hope these tips might lend you a helping hand this Thanksgiving. Stay strong, simply savor the flavor, and remember one of my favorites... "Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels."
WOW!!! THANKS Jen! What a great entry to the blog and that's a great attitude for all of us to remember. You are doing a great job at the gym and you can really see the changes. Keep up the good work, it's really paying off for you.
ReplyDeleteHave a Happy Thanksgiving.
Can I make a 'blog' suggestion? Instead of making each entry on the same original blog you could do a new "post" for each entry. Then we wouldn't have to scroll down through everything to get to the most recent. Easier to find?? Don't worry, I'll still read even if you don't do this, but it just simplifies things for the readers! p.s. I went to Gold's last night and I am going AGAIN today! right? My college-age daughter texted me this week and told me that she and I were going to get our "butts in gear" and finally 'do this thing~!' I am thankful for my kids!(most of the time!0
ReplyDeleteThanks Leni.... I will try that. Sorry, I haven't done this whole blogging thing before, still learning.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad for you and for the fact your kids want to get help keep you going and that they want to exercise right along with you.
Let's set up a day at Gold's and we can workout together.
See you soon. Have a great Thanksgiving!! :)
Dan, you look GREAT!! Yes, the sweater vest made me laugh! You have really done well! I enjoy your blog and do read it daily. I will be home having greens and going on a long walk Thanksgiving Day! I had my bad girl dinner today at Altoona Family Restaurant. A GREAT salad and WATER!!! YUMMY! Thanks again for your inspiration! Hugs!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sheila! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Keep up the good work on the Lifestyle change, it really seems to be working for you. :)
ReplyDeleteI am so happy we are keeping it simple tomorrow. or one - we have no one coming over and no where to go. I feel guilty about the no one coming over part b/c there is probably somebody somewhere who would love to join someone else, BUT it's been a hard year+ for my family and we truly need time alone, just the four of us. This year we are having a fried turkey injected with teriyaki - YUM! And not bad for you like you think. No gravy either! Roasted potatoes, asparagus and a homemade pumpkin pie. I'll make some deviled eggs and a veggie tray for afternoon snack, but just enough to carry us over without overindulging. That's all! Little to leftovers works for me. I'll use my salad plate as usual for my dish vs a dinner plate and I will be plenty full. Giving gratitude tomorrow for my family and peace that we need as well as delicious food and not too much and willpower to continue eating well, and not like a piggie :) Happy Thanksgiving everyone and whatever you do eat, make sure you are truly enjoying every bite b/c feeling guilty while you eat is no way to appreciate food or yourself. Savor whatever it is you are having - you and the cook deserve it - you can always hit the gym later.
